BABY-COLIC

Colic, Infant Colic - What is it ?

When a healthy baby cries continually and uncontrollably, sometimes belting out piercing screams and drawing up both legs, he is presumed to be suffering from infant colic. However, the disorder has only been surmised, not proven, since a baby is unable to explain what is amiss. Because colic episodes first appear between the baby's third and fourth weeks of life and go away by the end of the third month, the disorder is popularly known as three-month colic. The condition is common but harmless(occurring in 10.25 percent of babies),although it could be quite distressing to both the baby and the parents.

SYMPTOMS

  • Excessive, incessant crying or screaming episodes, which last for a few hours and tend to be worse in the evenings. The baby usually draws up his legs towards the stomach.
  • Passing of wind(flatus).
  • Flushed(red)face.
  • Stomach looks swollen after feeding(abdominal distension).

CAUSE

Not fully known, although infant colic is thought to be due to:

  • Spasm of the intestines.
  • Excessive amounts of air swallowed when feeding or crying.
  • Food allergy.
  • Hunger.
  • Indigestion.
  • Lactose intolerance.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Distract the baby by bathing cuddling, or changing his nappies.
  • Move the baby rhythmically(e.g. rock him in your arms or take him in your arms or take him for a walk in a stroller or a drive in the car).
  • Put the baby on his stomach and stroke his back.
  • Apply warmth on his stomach (e.g. using a warm face towel).
  • Burp the baby after feeding and after long spells of crying.
  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist if all efforts to pacify the baby have failed, if diarrhoea or vomiting occurs, if he is running a fever, or if there is a persistent swelling of the abdomen.

WHAT YOUR DOCTOR/PHARMACIST CAN DO FOR YOU

  • Confirm the likely presence of colic and rule out other ailments.
  • Prescribe medications or a mild sedative, if the baby cannot be pacified.
PREVENTION TIPS
  • Try to keep the baby from swallowing too much air by tilting the feeding bottle so that the milk covers the teat completely.
  • Always burp the baby adequately after each feed.
