BABY-NAPPY RASH

What is Nappy Rash ?

A raw red area on the baby's buttocks, genitals, groins, and inner thighs is called nappy rash, a condition that sometimes progresses into weeping red sores. When nappies (diapers) are not changed often enough, the ammonia in the soaked urine, bacteria in the stool, or traces of soap in nappies that are not properly rinsed irritate the skin and cause a rash to occur.

SYMPTOMS

  • Rough red patches on the buttocks, genitals, groins and thighs.
  • Blisters.
  • Weeping red sores.

COMPLICATIONS

  • Bacterial or fungal infection of the rash.
  • Urinary tract infection.
  • Eczema(allergic skin rash).

COMMON CAUSES

  • Skin irritation due to:
- Prolonged contact with wet nappies.

- Prolonged contact with stool.

- Soap that has not been thoroughly rinsed off the baby's diet, which makes his urine and stool more irritating to the skin (e.g. an increase in the acid content of ingested food).

  • Allergy or contact irritant on inner lining of nappy.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Change nappies frequently.
  • Apply barrier cream on the nappy area after every change.
  • Leave the genital area exposed for a as long as possible, as air dries the area and hastens the healing process.
  • Use good quality diapers that can keep baby's bottom dry.
  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist if the rash worsens, persists without improvement for more than a week, or sores develop.

WHAT YOUR DOCTOR/PHARMACIST CAN DO FOR YOU

  • Determine the cause of the rash.
  • Prescribe an antiseptic wash.
  • Prescribe antibacterial antifungal cream, if infection has set in.
  • If due to an allergy, determine the type of allergy and recommend treatment.

PREVENTION TIPS

  • Keep the buttocks, genitals and inner thighs clean and dry by changing nappies frequently.
  • Dust the nappy area with baby powder or corn starch after every change, or apply barrier cream without the powder.
  • Rinse soap off thoroughly when bathing the baby.
  • Rinse soap off thoroughly from the nappies (when using non-disposable diapers).
