Dengue fever

Dengue hemorrhagic fever - what is it ?

Dengue fever is an acute viral infection transmitted to humans by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in places where there is stagnant water. One of the symptoms is severe muscle and joint aches. Although no specific treatment or vaccine is yet available for dengue fever, it is not life-threatening. However, dengue haemorrhagic fever, a severe from of the disease that affects children and young people who are repeatedly infected with dengue fever.

SYMPTOMS

Most of the early symptoms of dengue fever/ dengue haemorrhagic are similar to those of flu:

  • High fever.
  • Bone and muscle aches.
  • Burning sensation and redness in the eyes.
  • Cough and runny nose.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Rash, skin flush.

Dengue haemorrhagic fever only:

  • Abdominal pain and vomitting (lasting 2-4 days).
  • Severe bleeding-nosebleeds, bleeding from the gums and under the skin vomitting of blood, rectal (back passage) bleeding, black, tarry stool, internal bleeding.
  • Red pinprick-sized spots on the skin due to spontaneous bruising.

Complications

Dengue haemorrhagic fever:

  • Shock (pallor, rapid breathing, cold sweat, clammy skin, drowsiness, fast pulse rate, and loss of consciousness.)
  • Jaundice (yellow eyes and skin),in rare cases.
  • Death.

Cause

  • Infection by one of several strains of the dengue virus. The virus is transmitted by an infected. Aedes aegypti mosquito, which bites mostly during day time.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Consult your doctor/pharmacist or go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital if you think you have dengue fever or dengue haemorrhagic fever.

WHAT YOUR DOCTOR/PHARMACIST CAN DO FOR YOU

  • Determine if you have dengue fever or dengue haemorrhagic fever. Early detection and treatment of the symptoms can be life-saving.
  • Admit you to hospital to monitor your blood pressure and blood count, and to watch out for complications.
  • Treat the complications. Complications include severe internal bleeding(in dengue haemorrhagic fever),which could be fatal if not treated aggressively. Fluids, blood, or plasma must be replaced quickly.
Prevention tips
  • Get rid of stagnant water in your premises, where the Aedes aegypti mosquito can breed.
  • Apply Abate to any stagnant water. Abate can be easily obtained from the nearest health office.
  • Apply mosquito repellant to keep mosquitoes away.
