Depression

What you need to know about Depression ?

Depression is a common psychiatric disorder characterized by intense feelings of sadness,pessimism,and an overall loss of interest in life.Practically all people go through periods of depression-a normal reaction to an unhappy event(e.g.,death of a family member or close friend,loss of a job).But such phases do not necessarily constitute a mental illness.The problem arises when the depression drags on and on deepens,or sets in for no apparent reason,and the person is unable to get the condition by himself.

Symptoms

Mild depression:

  • Anxiety.
  • Varying moods that occur without any apparent cause(e,g;crying spells).
Moderate depression:
  • Sleep disturbances.
  • Loss of appetite and weight.
  • Loss of interest in pleasurable or social activities and sex.
  • Loss of concentration,memory.
  • Tiredness,lethargy and or the opposite,extreme agitation and anxiety.
Severe depression
  • Deep sadness or loneliness,particularly at night.
  • Feelings of guilt,helplessness,hopelessness,or worthlessness.
  • Recurrent thoughts of suicide and death.
  • Hallucinations and delusions.
  • Becoming withdrawn (spending the time alone,usually in bed).

Common causes

It may be triggered by one or a combination of the following:

  • Severe upheaval, prolonged stress (e.g.death of loved one, bankruptcy, chroic illness).
  • Certain physical illness (e.g.,psoriasis,shingles,stroke,viral infections).
  • Hormonal imbalance (e.g.,sleeping medicine,oral contraceptives).
  • Weak,unstable,or absent relationships (e.g.,poor parent-child relationship).
  • Biochemical imbalance in the brain.

What you can do

  • Take a break,go on vacation.
  • Exercise regularly.Aerobic exercise causes the body to release mood-lifting chemicals.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Learn to relax. Watch comedies, read jokes and funny stories.
  • Seek the spiritual truth concerning your depression.
  • If you suspect depression in someone close to you,try to help him out of it by listening to his problem and offering advice.Take all hints at suicide seriously.
  • Consult a psychiatrist if,after trying self-care,you still cannot lift yourself up from depression.

  • Refer you or psychotherapy.
  • Prescribe drug treatment (e.g. anti-depressants).
  • Refer you to a psychiatrist who may use ECT (Electro convulsive therapy). for severe depression.
