VAGINITIS

What is Vaginitis ?

Vaginitis is a vaginal inflammation caused by infection, allergy, or hormonal imbalance. The condition is usually characterized by excessive amounts of vaginal discharge. Infection is frequently spread through sexual intercourse, which is why vaginitis is associated with a number of sexually transmitted diseases.

SYMPTOMS

  • Thick white, yellow or green vaginal discharge. In some cases, the discharge smells like fish.
  • Tenderness, irritation around the vagina.
  • Pain when passing urine and on sexual intercourse.
  • Itch in and around the vagina.
  • Burning sensation in the vagina.

COMPLICATIONS

  • Chronic vaginitis.
  • Infertility, if infection reaches the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes.
  • Transmission to a newborn baby by an infected mother.

COMMON CAUSES

  • Infection by any of various microorganisms, such as:
. Bacteria (e.g., gonorrhoea).

Viruses (e.g., genital herpes).

Fungi (e.g., candidiasis).

Protozoa (e.g., trichomoniasis).

  • Hormonal changes due to menopause. The vagina becomes more prone to inflammation as its lining becomes thin and dry. The condition is called atrophic vaginitis.
  • Allergy to soaps, contraceptive creams, vaginal douches, etc.
  • Foreign body (e.g., a tampon that is left inside too long).

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you suspect vaginitis or another disease (e.g., gonorrhoea).
  • Do not scratch any itch in the vaginal area.
  • Complete your prescribed medication even if symptoms have disappeared, as infection may still be present.
  • Inform your sex partner(s) of the infection and convince him/her to get medical treatment.
  • Do not engage in sex until condition is healed.
  • Avoid using tampons.
WHAT YOUR DOCTOR/PHARMACIST CAN DO FOR YOU
  • Perform tests to confirm vaginitis, rule out diabetes and sexually transmitted diseases, and determine the cause of the vaginitis.
  • Prescribe appropriate medicine for the different types of infection.
  • Prescribe estrogen drugs or hormone creams for atrophic vaginitis.
  • Treat the complications.

PREVENTION TIPS

  • Practice good hygiene. Wash the genital area thoroughly at least once a day. Avoid harsh and perfumed soaps. Always wipe gently from front to back.
  • Avoid using things you are allergic to (e.g., contraceptive creams, vaginal douches).
  • Wear loose pants and cotton underwear.
  • Use lubricating gels during sexual intercourse to avoid injury.
  • Change your sanitary napkin often.
  • Ask your gynaecologist about the need for hormone replacement therapy (if you are close to menopause).
